Internet Archive founder, Brewster Kahle sits down for a fireside chat with Wendy Hanamura, organizer of DWeb Camp (https://dwebcamp.org/), at c-base in Berlin, one of the first and oldest independent, stand-alone hackerspaces in the world. The talk was part of a day-long unconference and meetup inviting people to gather to help co-create DWeb Camp 2026 that will take place at Alte Hölle, 100 km from Berlin in July 2026.
After founding the Internet Archive 30 years ago, Kahle talks about why the Internet Archive has returned to Europe, founding independent organizations in Switzerland and Amsterdam. As an early AI student at MIT in the 1980s, he shares a vision for a different AI in Europe and how public institutions like the Internet Archive Europe may be able to contribute to a public AI that is not controlled by just a few corporations.
As a visionary behind the decentralized web movement, Kahle shares why it is imperative now to build decentralized systems of technologies, governance and funding. Ten years after first calling to “lock the web open for good,” (https://blog.archive.org/2015/02/11/locking-the-web-open-a-call-for-a-distributed-web/) Kahle gives a frank assessment of what went right and wrong, and how we might join hands to build something lasting for the future.
